An interview with Lucida Surfaces

It might not be the first thing your eyes notice when you walk into a room, but it’s the first thing your body senses: the flooring. And flooring done right pulls the whole room and building together: it is structure, stability, design and comfort, all rolled into one. That’s why getting the right flooring is so crucial.

After all, you can only feel as secure as the floor you’re standing on.

It was this conviction that inspired Eli Steinmetz, together with his partner Moishe Halpren, to found Lucida Surfaces back in 2006.  They set out to provide people with flooring options that offered the utmost in quality, durability, ease of installation and aesthetics.  Their success speaks for itself; today, they are an international company with clients across the United States, Canada and even the Dominican Republic.

Here, Shterny Steinmetz describes what their company does and what makes them so unique.

What kind of flooring do you sell?

We sell a complete line of high-quality vinyl flooring, from top-of-the-line luxury products down to an economical peel-and-stick.  The founders saw a real need in the market for good, durable vinyl flooring; until then, all high-quality flooring was wood, which takes a lot of time and money to install properly.  Our vinyl flooring provides the same elegance in design but with a very quick and easy installation, while our special technology ensures that the floor will last for many, many years.  And ours is the only floor system in the market that allows you to install, remove and re-install the flooring without any wear or tear to the floor or damage to the locking tabs.

Aside from the high quality and durability of our product, we work hard to offer the highest level in aesthetics as well.  As a look at our website demonstrates, we offer a very wide range of products, in many different styles and colors, from classic to cutting-edge, and we’re always updating our design offerings.

What kind of customers do you serve?

Our customer base ranges from designer-built management companies and healthcare facilities to large high-rise luxury buildings, shopping centers, camps and residential homeowners. In fact, we are proud to say that our flooring was chosen for the largest U.S. residential building project for 2022.

To give an example of the variety of clients we serve:  We did the flooring at the Superbowl for the tent of the car company Audi, one of the Superbowl sponsors (each Superbowl sponsor has its own tent at the game).   And we also did the flooring for what had to be one of our most interesting jobs: a couple out in the Midwest who took an old school bus and converted it into a home, documenting this effort on social media.

 What makes you unique in your field?

I’d say there are three primary things that make us unique:

  1. Our exceptional customer service. We don’t just sell flooring; we provide our clients with an outstanding experience from beginning to end. Every one of our customers knows that we truly care about them.
  2. Our creativity. We’re constantly developing new product lines, with new colors, shapes and designs, according to the current design trends.
  3. Our community focus. We feel very strongly about giving back to the community, and we strive to do so on a constant basis. We donate flooring to shuls, yeshivas and Chabad houses; tzedakah is very much a part of our company culture.

Another thing I’d like to add is that we value our employees highly and like to show it to them.  Our company is very family-oriented and we treat our staff well.  For example, we send our employees’ wives flowers before Shavuos and recently took our staff and their wives out to dinner.

Tell us about your experience as an exhibitor at the recent OJBA expo.

We keep coming back to the OJBA because we see it as a great opportunity to both gain and give. We’ve closed deals at the show and found many new customers.  But we also see it as a chance to give back to our customers, to connect with them and show them how much we value them.  That’s why we always make a huge booth with food, drinks, and even free massages!

We feel very appreciative to the frum, heimishe community for being such loyal customers and are always eager for opportunities to give back.  As the hub for all the frum people in the industry, the OJBA is the ideal place to do that!
