Yakov Yosef Babad of Rockland Hardware

There’s a lot of talk about the importance of online business today- and the fear that brick-and-mortar locations are going the way of the horse and buggy. But Yakov Yosef has a lot to say about that- and it’s not what you’d think. “ Why do people come to us instead of a place like Home Depot or Lowe’s? They get lost there- by us, they don’t.” As someone who’s struggled many times to get a human to answer a simple question in these large stores, this author agrees 100%!

So what do his three brick-and-mortar locations offer that Amazon or Home Depot doesn’t? Service and expertise. “ All my workers are very knowledgeable and experienced- many are a little older. That means whatever problem you throw at them- chances are they’ve heard it before.” This expertise is the reason, Mr. Babad actually prefers to hire people who are a bit older. 

Mr. Babad himself bought his first hardware store after working in a paint factory for thirteen years, which gave him a great grounding in the subtleties of different paint types and their uses, as well as on-the-job training doing “ everything that was needed”. Once he owned his own store he began selling to walk-ins and also pitched property managers and began selling to them. Today there are three locations and twenty-five workers, that are thriving, BH. And the rest, as they say, is history…
