Payroll Without the Usual Tradeoffs

Pincus Schiff of FRIDAY

At some point, payroll stops being something you can handle casually. More employees, different schedules, bonuses, time off — and suddenly it takes more time.

That’s when the tradeoffs become hard to ignore. A payroll company can take it off your plate, but you’re now working around someone else’s schedule. Software gives you control — but most platforms are built for larger teams, loaded with features that smaller businesses don’t have time to learn.

FRIDAY is designed for that middle ground business owners — who want the flexibility of software without the complexity that usually comes with it.

“We’re a payroll company… specifically designed for smaller businesses,” said Pincus Schiff. “Our specialty and uniqueness is simplicity.”

That focus on simplicity shaped how the company was developed from the start. When Schiff brought on a technical co-founder, the deciding factor wasn’t just expertise — it was the ability to strip things down. “It’s harder to build a simple product,” Schiff said.

The platform is built to give business owners control over payroll without pulling them into the complexity behind it. Employees clock in, hours can be reviewed and adjusted, and payroll can be run directly through the system — while calculations, filings, and tax payments are handled automatically.

That shows up in day-to-day work. Payroll doesn’t always follow a fixed schedule. Employees finish a job and expect to be paid. A bonus needs to go out. Hours need to be adjusted without delay.

With traditional payroll providers, those moments can turn into back-and-forth — or have to wait until the next cycle. With FRIDAY, payroll can be run as needed.

“They want full functionality… they want full control,” Schiff said. “I want to be able to do it myself, but I don’t want to work too hard.”

The platform also brings together functions that are usually split across systems — time tracking, payroll, and filings — so businesses aren’t moving between tools or providers to complete the process.

Pricing follows the same logic. Instead of additional charges for extra payroll runs, filings, or year-end forms, the system runs on a flat monthly structure, with those components included.

FRIDAY has returned to OJBA for a third year, continuing to build relationships with business owners who manage teams. At the show, clients who signed up months or even years ago sometimes approach the booth — people Schiff might not recognize by name anymore. He says in the early days he knew every client personally, but as the company has grown, that level of familiarity isn’t always possible. While he would prefer to know everyone, he sees letting go of that control as a necessary part of building something larger — and a sign that it’s working.
