EV Charging Where Infrastructure Does the Heavy Lifting
Josh Klein of Kwev
Tenants are asking about EV charging. Developers are planning for it.
But whether it’s a request that comes up mid-lease… or something spec’d into a new building, the real work isn’t the chargers — it’s the electrical infrastructure behind them.
Based in Howell New Jersey, Kwev handles that work for multifamily and commercial properties. The company manages the design, engineering, installation, and ongoing operation of EV charging systems — work that starts well before a charger is ever mounted. As Josh Klein, co-founder of Kwev, explained, “Electric car chargers are really more about the infrastructure. The heavy lifting is bringing power to the property — from where the utility comes in all the way to where the chargers are placed.”
That distinction becomes especially clear in existing buildings… where power has to be routed carefully, and systems need to hold up, once cars are plugging in every day.
For many property owners, EV charging begins as an amenity — something tenants are increasingly asking about — but how it’s handled varies. Some buildings include charging as part of parking. Others charge directly for usage. As Josh put it, “Property owners are putting this in as an amenity, but it can also drive revenue and attract more affluent tenants.”
Kwev also offers a no-cost option for property owners, covering installation and maintenance in exchange for a share of the charging revenue. The company focuses exclusively on multifamily and commercial projects — charging systems that need to function day to day in shared parking environments, not one-off installs.
This was Kwev’s second year exhibiting at OJBA. One relationship Josh mentioned began with a conversation at the show… and only moved forward months later. “The sales cycle is long,” he said. “You have to be patient. About six months after the show, we went into contract.”
You may have seen Kwev recently in Ami Magazine’s Lunchbreak column, following an interview recorded during the OJBA Mini Lunchbreak sessions.
Hear Josh explain how Kwev approaches EV charging for multifamily and commercial properties.
