When Equipment Decisions Evolve Over Time

Sam Benedek of Monticello Equipment Company

A machine is rented for a specific job.

Sometimes it’s returned when the work is complete. Other times, the work continues, and what began as a rental becomes a longer-term decision.

Monticello Equipment Company works with clients at each stage of that process — providing rentals for short-term needs, selling new and used equipment, and helping companies transition from rental to ownership when the time makes sense. The company runs its dealership and rental operations from Monticello, New York, supplying earthmoving equipment, forklifts, aerial lifts, and specialized machinery to contractors, municipalities, and property operators across Sullivan, Orange, and Rockland counties, the boroughs, and parts of New Jersey, including Lakewood.

The rental-to-purchase pathway is central to how many clients work with Monticello. As Sam Benedek said, “Many times a rental will turn into a sale where a company’s holding onto a machine for months, and they’ll make a decision — we should probably just buy this at this point.” When that happens, rental payments can sometimes be applied toward the final sale, allowing companies to test equipment in real conditions before committing to ownership.

Monticello is an authorized DEVELON dealer with roughly 150 units in inventory. The company sells new machinery, offers used equipment, maintains a rental fleet, and provides ongoing service support — covering the full lifecycle of equipment use, rather than a single transaction.

Although Sam had attended OJBA events previously, this was Monticello Equipment Company’s first time exhibiting at the show in the meadowlands. Bringing equipment onto the show floor made the scale of Monticello’s operation immediately visible — from compact machines to heavy units weighing 160,000 pounds that were driven directly into the venue.

The show has already proven valuable for the company. After exhibiting at the OJBA Upstate event, Monticello sold equipment to the Town of Fallsburg’s Highway Department — a concrete example of how conversations at the show translate into real work.

For Sam, success at OJBA isn’t limited to same-day sales. It’s about visibility, relationships, and being part of the decision process when equipment needs shift from short-term to long-term.
