Engineering Deep Foundations for Challenging Soil Conditions

A developer moves forward with a project. The design is approved. The schedule is set. Then the geotechnical report comes back… and the soil can’t support the structure.
At that point, everything depends on what happens below ground.
“If the foundation is faulty, then your whole building is going to be a problem.”
That’s the point where IDEAL Foundation Systems enters a project. The company engineers, manufactures, and installs deep foundation systems for developments built on weak or variable soil… stepping in when the ground beneath won’t hold the weight above.
Bradley Stroyer, who represented IDEAL at OJBA, explained that the company becomes involved after soil borings show poor bearing capacity. When engineers recommend piles, IDEAL evaluates the conditions and designs a foundation system that transfers the building’s load down to stable ground.
The company has logged 19 patents over the past 13 years, reflecting ongoing innovation in foundation engineering and system design.
There’s no universal solution. Soil conditions vary widely across New York and the surrounding region. Some sites have shallow bedrock beneath them, requiring micropiles that drill down and socket directly into rock. Others involve weaker soils that demand piles screwed, drilled, or driven down to a deeper bearing layer. IDEAL engineers each system around those realities — because the ground determines what’s possible above it.
Much of this work happens before a structure ever takes shape. Foundation pile systems are rarely visible at shows like this… yet they often determine whether a project moves forward at all.

IDEAL stays involved from engineering through installation, coordinating closely with project teams to ensure the foundation system matches both the site conditions and the structure being built. While the company works nationwide — with projects ranging from Alaska to the U.S. Virgin Islands — New York remains a primary focus.
This was IDEAL’s first time at OJBA, after a developer recommended the show. Within the first few hours, several developers had already stopped by to discuss upcoming projects and soil challenges they were encountering early on in planning.
“We’ve had a few developers already come by, and I’m excited to see where it goes,” Bradley said.
For IDEAL, the value of the show was clear: connecting with developers at the stage where foundation decisions still have flexibility… before construction assumptions harden into costly problems.
